For 2nd trimester

Spirulina is a best-in-category nutritional supplement for pregnant women in their second trimester, providing dense, bioavailable nutrients crucial for fetal development and maternal health, especially in nutritionally vulnerable populations like those in India. The second trimester marks a phase of accelerated fetal organogenesis, increased maternal blood volume, and heightened nutritional demand, particularly for iron, folate, calcium, protein, vitamin B12, and essential fatty acids. Spirulina, being naturally rich in heme-absorbable iron, complete protein (with all essential amino acids), β-carotene (provitamin A), B-complex vitamins, and γ-linolenic acid (GLA), directly addresses common pregnancy deficiencies that lead to anemia, preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and maternal fatigue (Khan et al., 2005; Kapoor & Mehta, 1993). Its high antioxidant content, including phycocyanin and chlorophyll, combats oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which are linked to preeclampsia and gestational complications (Riss et al., 2007). Moreover, Spirulina’s alkalinity and easy digestibility make it well-tolerated during pregnancy-related digestive sensitivity. Studies in rural Indian populations have shown improved hemoglobin levels, birth weight, and maternal energy status with Spirulina supplementation (Sankar et al., 2011). With its nutrient density, safety profile, and systemic benefits, Spirulina is ideally suited for inclusion in antenatal care protocols during the second trimester in India.
